Having qualified from the University of Nottingham in 2012, Gemma has
spent the last 12 years honing her skills as an equine vet and developing
particular interests in sports horse medicine and poor performance.

During this time she came to appreciate the importance of addressing
the whole horse when tackling a range of medical and orthopaedic
conditions.

Having undertaken her acupuncture training with the Western
Veterinary Acupuncture Group in 2022, she has since enjoyed combining
her extensive veterinary knowledge with the benefits of acupuncture to
provide an all-encompassing approach to a wide variety of equine health
issues.

As a member of the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists
(ABVA), Gemma is dedicated to providing a friendly, evidence-based
approach to all of her cases.

Gemma’s unique insight as an experienced equine vet, horse owner and
keen competitor allow her to assess and treat a variety of cases with
empathy and respect.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been used in humans and animals for over 2000
years. More recently, extensive research has allowed us to understand
the widespread benefits of this ancient treatment in animals.

Using very fine, sterile needles inserted into different areas and depths
across the body, acupuncture is well tolerated by the vast majority of
equine patients.

The following processes are stimulated by acupuncture:

  • Release of anti-inflammatory molecules
  • Relaxation of muscles, fascia and other soft tissue structures
  • Release of endorphins and oxytocin
  • Increase in blood flow and improved healing

Best used alongside conventional Veterinary treatment, acupuncture
is often used to aid healing, increase suppleness and reduce stress.

Gemma always ensures that every equine patient is assessed based
on their individual Veterinary history, current presentation and an
in-depth initial consultation and assessment.

Case examples:

  • Maintenance of performance
  • Tightness / soreness through neck / back / pelvic regions
  • Lameness and other orthopaedic complaints
  • Support of mobility in older horses and ponies
  • Wound healing
  • Poor performance
  • Post-operative support
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Head shaking
  • Many more
